What it means
Pressure control solenoid H is commanded on but does not produce the expected pressure. Spool stuck closed or hydraulic feed restricted.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid H directs hydraulic pressure when the transmission control module commands it on. P2817 sets when H is commanded to produce pressure but the expected pressure response does not occur, which can indicate a stuck-closed spool or restricted hydraulic feed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck in closed position
- Hydraulic feed restricted by debris
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and transmission codes to see when H was commanded and whether the fault occurred during a particular shift.
- Check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, and look for signs of contamination that could restrict the H feed.
- Inspect solenoid H's connector and harness for damage that could prevent the module's command from reaching the solenoid.
- Use scan-tool data to compare the command to H with the available pressure or shift response data.
- Test H's electrical operation and coil resistance using the manufacturer's procedure to rule out an electrical fault before hydraulic work.
- If the command and electrical checks are sound, inspect the H solenoid spool, feed passage, and valve body for sticking or debris.
Common fixes
- Correct the transmission fluid level or condition if it does not meet the manufacturer's requirements.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector faults that prevent solenoid H from responding.
- Clean a restricted H hydraulic feed passage when the manufacturer's service procedure allows it.
- Replace or service solenoid H if its spool is stuck closed or contaminated.
- Repair the valve body if wear or debris continues to restrict H's hydraulic feed.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving far or putting the transmission under heavy load because the commanded H circuit may not build pressure, allowing slipping and heat to damage internal parts. Stop if the transmission loses drive or shifts unpredictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
