What it means
Pressure control solenoid N is commanded on but does not produce the expected pressure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Pressure control solenoid N regulates hydraulic pressure in the transmission when the TCM commands it on. This code sets when the solenoid is commanded on but the expected pressure response is not detected, which can happen if its spool is stuck closed or its hydraulic feed is restricted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck in closed position
- Hydraulic feed restricted by debris
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light may illuminate
- Harsh or delayed shifting
- Slipping or unexpected shifts
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check related pressure, solenoid and gear-ratio codes to identify the operating conditions and shifts involved.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the specified procedure, and note any evidence of contamination that could restrict the solenoid feed.
- Inspect the transmission harness and solenoid N connector for damage, corrosion, fluid intrusion or a poor connection that could prevent the command from reaching the solenoid.
- Use a scan tool to compare the TCM command for solenoid N with available pressure or shift data during the conditions that set the code.
- If the electrical command is present but the pressure response is absent, inspect solenoid N and its hydraulic feed for a stuck closed spool or debris, following the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service fluid that is confirmed to be contaminated, following the vehicle’s requirements.
- Repair a loose, corroded or damaged solenoid N connector or harness.
- Clean or replace pressure control solenoid N if its spool is stuck or contaminated.
- Clear a confirmed restriction in solenoid N’s hydraulic feed and repair any resulting valve-body damage.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration, towing and extended driving while shifts are delayed, harsh or slipping; inadequate pressure can accelerate clutch and transmission damage. If the transmission enters limp mode or slips severely, stop in a safe place and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
