What it means
Shift solenoid F shows intermittent electrical or hydraulic faults that come and go. Loose connector or marginal coil.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Shift solenoid F is an electrically controlled valve that helps route transmission fluid for selected gear changes. The transmission control module monitors the solenoid F circuit and its response, and sets P2710 when the fault appears intermittently, often as a connection or coil problem that comes and goes.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid connector not fully seated
- Coil resistance drifts with temperature
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related transmission codes, then review live data to see whether the fault coincides with a particular shift or operating temperature.
- Inspect the solenoid F connector and harness for a loose latch, corrosion, fluid intrusion, chafing, or damage that could interrupt contact during vibration.
- With the vehicle safely parked, use the manufacturer’s procedure to check whether gently moving the harness makes the solenoid F circuit reading or fault status change.
- Measure solenoid F coil resistance and circuit continuity when cold and, if the fault is temperature-related, when warm; compare results with the manufacturer’s specifications.
- If wiring and coil readings remain normal, test the solenoid F control and transmission response using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the solenoid F connector.
- Clean corroded terminals or repair a damaged connector.
- Repair chafed or intermittently open wiring in the solenoid F circuit.
- Replace solenoid F if its coil tests intermittently outside the manufacturer’s specification.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the fault causes missed, harsh, or unpredictable shifts, and avoid towing or heavy acceleration until it is repaired. An intermittent solenoid F problem can leave the transmission in a reduced-function mode or worsen into loss of a gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
