What it means
Shift solenoid F stays in the activated state when commanded off. Affected gear stays applied so the transmission cannot shift correctly.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Shift solenoid F controls a hydraulic path used to select or change transmission gears. P2708 means the controller detects that the solenoid remains active when it should be off, which can keep the associated gear or apply path engaged and disrupt shifting.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck in open position
- TCM output driver stuck on
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame and transmission data, and identify which gear or shift was affected when solenoid F remained active.
- Inspect solenoid F wiring and connectors for shorts, damaged insulation, or poor connections that could hold its command on.
- Use a scan tool to compare the commanded state of solenoid F with available feedback and the transmission's actual response.
- With the wiring diagram, test the solenoid F circuit and controller output according to the manufacturer's procedure to distinguish a wiring fault from a stuck driver.
- If the circuit command is correct, inspect and test solenoid F and its valve-body passage for a spool stuck open or debris.
Common fixes
- Repair a shorted or damaged wire in the solenoid F circuit.
- Secure or repair a faulty solenoid F connector.
- Clean or replace solenoid F if it remains mechanically open during testing.
- Repair the controller output driver only if circuit testing confirms it is stuck on.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid high speeds, towing, or hard acceleration because a gear path that stays applied can cause harsh shifts or transmission damage. If the vehicle is stuck in a gear, slips, or becomes difficult to control, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
