OBD-II fault code

P08D9: Shift Solenoid K Intermittent

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the electrical operation of shift solenoid K. It sets this code when the circuit signal or solenoid operation becomes inconsistent intermittently.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid K is an electrically operated transmission valve, and the TCM monitors its circuit and operation during shifts. This code sets when the signal or operation becomes inconsistent intermittently, so the fault may disappear when the vehicle is stationary or the harness is no longer vibrating.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not fully seated
  2. Coil resistance marginal
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check whether the intermittent fault coincided with a particular gear, temperature, or driving condition.
  2. Review live data for solenoid K commands and circuit status while the transmission is operating, if the scan tool provides those readings.
  3. Inspect the solenoid K connector for an incompletely seated plug, weak pin fit, corrosion, or fluid intrusion.
  4. With the vehicle safely stationary, gently move the accessible harness while monitoring solenoid K circuit data for dropouts.
  5. Check the solenoid K coil and circuit for continuity and stable readings while moving the connector and harness, following the manufacturer's specifications.
  6. If the circuit remains stable, investigate an intermittent solenoid K valve or TCM output fault using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure the solenoid K connector.
  • Clean corroded terminals or repair poor pin contact in the connector.
  • Repair chafed or internally broken wiring in the solenoid K circuit.
  • Replace solenoid K if its coil or operation is intermittent during testing.

Can I keep driving?

Intermittent faults can suddenly cause harsh or missing shifts or trigger limp mode, so avoid high-speed or demanding driving if symptoms occur. Arrange diagnosis soon, especially if slipping or shuddering is getting worse.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
