OBD-II fault code

P0774: Shift Solenoid E Intermittent

What it means

Shift solenoid E shows intermittent electrical or hydraulic dropouts — vibration, loose connector or ATF contamination.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Shift solenoid E controls a hydraulic shift function through an electrical command from the transmission control module. This code sets when the E circuit or solenoid response intermittently drops out or becomes erratic during operation, often as vibration or movement affects a connection or harness.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose connector at the transmission
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note the gear, speed, and transmission temperature when the fault occurred, then check whether it returns under similar conditions.
  2. Inspect the transmission connector for a loose fit, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or damaged terminals that could intermittently interrupt solenoid E.
  3. Trace the E solenoid harness for rubbing, tension, or contact with a vibrating or hot component.
  4. Monitor solenoid E command and circuit status with a scan tool while gently moving the accessible connector and harness to look for dropouts.
  5. If the wiring remains stable, test solenoid E for intermittent electrical or hydraulic response using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure the transmission connector and repair loose or corroded terminals.
  • Repair or reroute wiring that rubs or vibrates against nearby parts.
  • Replace a damaged connector or harness section that causes intermittent contact.
  • Replace shift solenoid E if testing confirms that its operation drops out intermittently.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid heavy loads until the intermittent fault is diagnosed, since an unexpected shift disruption can affect acceleration and slipping can overheat the transmission. Stop if shifts become unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
