OBD-II fault code

P08E2: Shift Solenoid L Intermittent

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the electrical operation of shift solenoid L. It sets this code when the circuit signal or solenoid operation becomes inconsistent intermittently.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid L is an electrically operated transmission valve, and the transmission control module monitors whether its circuit responds consistently when commanded. P08E2 sets when that response cuts in and out, even if it is normal at other times.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not fully seated
  2. Coil resistance marginal
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check when the fault occurred, including transmission temperature, vehicle speed, and solenoid L command data.
  2. Inspect the solenoid L connector for a loose fit, corrosion, fluid ingress, damaged seals, or terminals that may move in the housing.
  3. Check the harness for chafing or strain, then gently move the accessible wiring while monitoring solenoid L data for a change.
  4. Measure solenoid L coil resistance when cold and, if the fault is temperature-related, after the component warms; compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Check circuit continuity and terminal contact at the transmission connector and control-module end while moving the harness.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure the solenoid L connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded or loose connector terminals and restore the connector seal.
  • Repair wiring that loses contact when moved or vibrated.
  • Replace shift solenoid L if its coil resistance is inconsistent or outside the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the shifts become unpredictable, the transmission slips, or limp mode engages; an intermittent fault can return without warning and worsen shift quality. Stop if the vehicle cannot change gears safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
