What it means
The control circuit of shift solenoid H reports a control circuit/open condition. Gear element actuation cannot be commanded reliably on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid H is an electrically controlled transmission valve that helps apply the hydraulic elements used for gear changes. The transmission control module monitors the H solenoid circuit and sets P09A1 when it detects an open circuit that prevents reliable control of solenoid H.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in solenoid control wire
- Open solenoid coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and related transmission codes, then review live gear-command and solenoid H data to identify the conditions when the fault appears.
- Inspect the transmission connector and the harness leading to solenoid H for a loose connection, corrosion, chafing, or a terminal pushed back in the connector.
- Use the vehicle wiring information to check continuity along the solenoid H control wire and its connectors.
- Measure the solenoid H coil and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the coil is open.
- If the coil and harness are intact, inspect the module connector and output path for an open circuit.
Common fixes
- Seat the transmission connector fully and secure any loose terminal.
- Repair an open or damaged section of the solenoid H control wire.
- Replace shift solenoid H if its coil fails the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair a damaged connector terminal or module-side circuit connection.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission has entered limp mode, since the expected gear changes may not occur and slipping can cause further damage. Arrange recovery if the vehicle cannot maintain a predictable gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
