OBD-II fault code

P0754: Shift Solenoid A Intermittent

What it means

The control module monitors the electrical circuit for shift solenoid A. It sets this code when the circuit signal is intermittent or erratic rather than consistently present.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module monitors the electrical signal to shift solenoid A, which operates a hydraulic valve used for shifting. P0754 sets when that circuit becomes intermittent or erratic, so the fault may appear only with vibration, temperature changes, or harness movement; the code does not identify which gears solenoid A controls.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, including temperature and conditions at the time of the intermittent solenoid A fault.
  2. Inspect the solenoid A connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, poor routing, or signs of movement against another component.
  3. With the vehicle secured and following the manufacturer’s procedure, monitor the solenoid A circuit while checking for signal dropouts as the harness and connector are gently moved.
  4. Check circuit continuity and the solenoid A coil for an intermittent open or short, comparing results with the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the circuit remains stable, check the module connector and solenoid driver for intermittent contact or operation.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose solenoid A connector and restore proper harness routing.
  • Clean corroded contacts or replace damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed or internally broken wiring in the solenoid A circuit.
  • Replace solenoid A if its coil tests intermittently faulty.
  • Repair a confirmed intermittent module connector or driver fault.

Can I keep driving?

Because the fault can return without warning and affect shifting, keep trips short and avoid heavy loads until the connection is repaired. Stop driving if shifts become unpredictable, the transmission slips, or drive is lost.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
