OBD-II fault code

P08DD: Shift Solenoid K Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the control circuit for shift solenoid K. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit in that control path.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid K is controlled through a circuit between the TCM and the transmission valve body. The TCM sets this code when it detects an open path in that circuit, which can prevent it from operating solenoid K as intended.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in control wire
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to capture freeze-frame data and note the commanded state of solenoid K when the open-circuit fault appeared.
  2. Inspect the solenoid K connector for a pin pushed back, a loose lock, corrosion, or fluid contamination.
  3. Follow the solenoid K control wire along its accessible route and look for breaks, chafing, or prior repairs.
  4. Test circuit continuity and the solenoid K coil against the manufacturer's specifications to locate the open.
  5. If the coil and wiring are intact, check the TCM connector and output path for an open connection.

Common fixes

  • Reseat the solenoid K connector and secure any pin that has backed out.
  • Repair a break in the solenoid K control wire.
  • Replace solenoid K if its coil is open.
  • Repair an open connection at the TCM connector or output circuit if testing identifies one.

Can I keep driving?

A missing solenoid K circuit can cause incorrect shifts or limp mode, so avoid long or high-speed trips if the transmission is not shifting normally. If symptoms are severe or it slips, stop driving and arrange repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
