What it means
The transmission control module monitors the electrical circuit for shift solenoid L. It sets this code when the circuit has an electrical fault, such as an unexpected voltage or current.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid L is an electrically operated valve in the transmission hydraulic system that helps select or control a gear. The transmission control module monitors its circuit and sets P08E1 when the electrical response is faulty, such as current or voltage that does not match the expected operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal solenoid fault
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record the freeze-frame data and check transmission live data for solenoid L commands and any related transmission codes before clearing anything.
- Inspect the solenoid L wiring and transmission connector for damaged insulation, fluid or water intrusion, corrosion, loose terminals, or a pushed-back pin.
- With the vehicle safely supported and the ignition off, check solenoid L coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- Check continuity and shorts in the solenoid L control wiring between the transmission connector and control module using the vehicle wiring diagram.
- If the wiring and coil pass, use a scan tool's supported output test to compare the command to the circuit response and transmission shift behavior.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose solenoid L connector.
- Repair damaged or corroded solenoid L wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace a faulty shift solenoid L.
- Repair a confirmed fault in the solenoid L control circuit or control module.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips if shifts are harsh, slipping, or delayed; the transmission may enter limp mode or suffer further damage. If the vehicle cannot select gears reliably, stop driving and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
