OBD-II fault code

P08DB: Shift Solenoid K Control Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on the shift solenoid K control line is below the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The TCM switches shift solenoid K through a control circuit to route transmission fluid to a gear element. This code sets when voltage on the solenoid K control line falls below the expected range, which can happen with a short to ground, a shorted coil, or poor electrical contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Coil shorted internally
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check the commanded state of solenoid K when the low-voltage fault was recorded.
  2. Review live circuit data, if available, to see whether solenoid K control voltage stays low when the TCM changes its command.
  3. Inspect the solenoid K control wire for rubbing or contact with ground and check the connector for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins.
  4. Test the solenoid K coil and control wire for a short to ground, following the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the coil and wiring test correctly, check connector contact resistance and the TCM output against the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Repair a solenoid K control wire that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals and restore secure pin contact.
  • Replace solenoid K if its coil is shorted internally.
  • Repair the TCM output circuit if testing confirms it is pulling the control line low.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission shifts abnormally or slips, avoid driving farther than necessary because the fault can lead to limp mode or increased internal wear. If it shifts normally, limit use and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
