What it means
The transmission control module monitors the electrical circuit for shift solenoid K. It sets this code when the circuit has an electrical fault, such as an unexpected voltage or current.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid K is an electrically controlled valve that directs hydraulic pressure inside the transmission. The TCM monitors the solenoid K circuit for expected electrical behavior while controlling shifts. This code sets when the circuit has an electrical fault, such as an unexpected voltage or current, rather than simply reporting that the valve is mechanically stuck.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal solenoid fault
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and note the commanded state of solenoid K when the circuit fault was detected.
- Check live transmission data for solenoid K command and any circuit voltage or current readings the scan tool provides.
- Inspect the solenoid K connector and harness for loose or corroded pins, fluid intrusion, chafing, or breaks.
- Check the solenoid K coil and wiring for continuity or shorts using the manufacturer's test procedure and specifications.
- If the wiring and coil pass, test the TCM output and its connector to locate an electrical fault in the control path.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean the solenoid K connector if contact is loose or contaminated.
- Repair damaged wiring in the solenoid K circuit.
- Replace solenoid K if its coil fails testing.
- Repair the TCM or its output circuit if testing isolates the fault there.
Can I keep driving?
If shifting is harsh, delayed, or slipping, avoid long trips and heavy acceleration; the transmission may enter limp mode or suffer additional wear. If it shifts normally, drive only as needed until the electrical fault is diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
