OBD-II fault code

P082A: Gear Lever X Position Sensor 1 Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The X-position sensor 1 signal is outside the expected range or does not perform as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

X-position sensor 1 measures the electronic gear lever's left-to-right position. P082A sets when its signal is outside the expected operating range or does not track lever movement as expected, which can result from a degraded sensor or loose mounting.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Aged Hall element
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and graph the X-position live signal while moving the lever left and right, checking for an out-of-range or poorly tracking reading.
  2. Inspect sensor 1 and its mounting for looseness, damage, or movement that could affect the X-axis reading.
  3. Check the X-position sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, poor contact, opens, shorts, or chafing.
  4. Measure the sensor circuit signal through lever travel and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a sensor response problem from a wiring fault.
  5. If the circuit is sound but the reading remains outside range, test the X-position sensor and gear lever assembly before considering the transmission control module.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose X-position sensor mounting.
  • Clean or repair a poor sensor connector contact.
  • Repair damaged X-signal wiring.
  • Replace a degraded X-position sensor 1.
  • Repair or replace the gear lever assembly if its internal parts prevent a valid X-position reading.

Can I keep driving?

If the lever still selects gears consistently, limit driving and watch for worsening selection problems. If the transmission misreads the lever or cannot engage the intended gear, stop safely and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
