OBD-II fault code

P0828: Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit High

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the upshift/downshift switch circuit signal. It sets this code when the signal rises above the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module reads the upshift and downshift switch circuit to detect requests for a higher or lower gear. P0828 sets when the signal rises above its expected range, which can result from a short to battery voltage or a wiring fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch wire shorted to battery voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor the upshift/downshift switch input live data with both controls released, checking whether the signal is high or shows a request unexpectedly.
  2. Inspect the switch connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, pinching, or contact with a battery-positive supply.
  3. Check the upshift/downshift signal wiring for a short to battery voltage and verify connector terminals are seated correctly.
  4. Measure the circuit signal and continuity against the manufacturer's specification, isolating the switch and harness to locate the high reading.
  5. If the circuit and switch pass, assess the gear lever assembly and then the transmission control module for a confirmed fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring pinched against or shorted to a battery-positive supply.
  • Clean or repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace a faulty upshift/downshift switch.
  • Repair or replace the gear lever assembly if the circuit fault is internal.
  • Repair or replace the transmission control module if its input fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission shifts unexpectedly, misses shifts, or locks into one gear, avoid high-speed driving and heavy acceleration. Stop safely if it slips or cannot select a predictable gear, since continued driving can worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
