OBD-II fault code

P0772: Shift Solenoid E Stuck On

What it means

Shift solenoid E remains hydraulically active when commanded off — associated clutch or band cannot release, blocking dependent shifts.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Shift solenoid E controls fluid flow to a particular transmission clutch or band. The transmission control module sets this code when E remains hydraulically active after being commanded off, preventing the shift element from releasing and potentially blocking dependent shifts.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid stuck open
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review commanded gear, actual gear, and input and output speeds to see which shifts are affected by the failure to release.
  2. Check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, looking for contamination that could make solenoid E stick.
  3. Inspect the E solenoid connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals that could interfere with its command.
  4. Command solenoid E on and off with a scan tool if supported, and observe whether the transmission response changes as expected.
  5. If the electrical command changes correctly but the shift element remains applied, test solenoid E and its hydraulic passage, then inspect the associated clutch or band for a release fault.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or service contaminated fluid according to the vehicle specification.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the solenoid E connector.
  • Clean or replace shift solenoid E if it sticks in the active position.
  • Repair a restricted hydraulic passage or a clutch or band that fails to release if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the transmission binds, shifts harshly, or cannot select gears normally; an applied clutch or band can overheat and cause further damage. Stop if shifts become unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
