What it means
Shift solenoid H remains hydraulically active when commanded off — corresponding clutch or band cannot release, blocking dependent shifts.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Shift solenoid H controls fluid flow for a particular transmission clutch or band. The transmission control module sets this code when H remains hydraulically active after it is commanded off, so the clutch or band may stay applied and interfere with shifts that depend on its release.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid stuck open
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review commanded gear, actual gear, and input and output speeds to identify which shifts are affected.
- Check the fluid level and condition by the manufacturer’s procedure, and look for contamination that could keep solenoid H from releasing.
- Inspect the transmission connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or loose connections that could prevent the H solenoid from receiving the off command.
- Use a scan tool to command solenoid H on and off, if supported, and observe whether the transmission response changes as expected.
- If the electrical command switches correctly but the hydraulic response does not, test solenoid H and its passage for sticking, then inspect the associated clutch or band for failure to release.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service contaminated fluid according to the vehicle specification.
- Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure the transmission connector.
- Clean or replace shift solenoid H if it sticks in the active position.
- Repair a restricted hydraulic passage or a clutch or band that will not release if testing identifies an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving, especially if the transmission binds, shifts harshly, or cannot select gears normally; a clutch or band that stays applied can overheat and damage the transmission. Stop if the vehicle loses predictable control of its shifts.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
