What it means
Shift Solenoid "E" Electrical: an electrical fault is present. Shift solenoids route transmission hydraulic pressure to engage the gears; faults cause harsh, delayed, or missed shifts.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid E is an electrically controlled valve that routes transmission fluid for a particular shift function. The transmission control module sets this code when it detects an electrical fault in the E control circuit, which can prevent the intended shift and may trigger a protective operating mode.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or shorted winding
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related transmission or system voltage codes that could indicate a shared power or ground problem.
- With the ignition off, inspect the transmission connector and wiring to solenoid E for breaks, chafing, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or loose terminals.
- Check the relevant fuse and circuit power and ground using the vehicle’s wiring information.
- Measure solenoid E coil continuity and check its circuit for shorts or opens, comparing readings with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the circuit and solenoid test correctly, check the control module output and terminals using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect, clean, or repair a loose or corroded transmission connector.
- Repair an open, shorted, or chafed wire in the solenoid E circuit.
- Replace shift solenoid E if its coil fails the specified electrical test.
- Repair a confirmed power or ground fault, or address a control module fault verified by testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the transmission is in limp mode or shifts harshly, avoid normal traffic and arrange a safe route to repair; do not tow or accelerate hard. Stop driving if the vehicle slips, loses drive, or cannot maintain predictable gear selection.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
