What it means
An electrical fault has been detected in the shift solenoid G circuit. The code does not specify whether the fault is an open, short, or other circuit problem.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Shift solenoid G is an electrically controlled valve that routes hydraulic pressure to support transmission shifts. The control module monitors the solenoid G circuit and sets this code when it detects an electrical fault; the code does not say whether the cause is an open, short, or another circuit problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open solenoid coil
- Damaged wiring at the transmission case connector
- ATF-soaked connector causing leakage path
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and transmission codes, then review live data for solenoid G commands and any protective transmission mode.
- Inspect the transmission case connector and solenoid G wiring for damage, loose contacts, corrosion, or ATF intrusion.
- Check the solenoid G circuit for opens and shorts using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's test procedure.
- Measure the solenoid G winding and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification to check for an open coil.
- If the wiring and winding pass, test the control circuit and module output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the transmission case connector.
- Clean contaminated terminals and repair connector seals that allow fluid intrusion.
- Repair damaged or shorted wiring to solenoid G.
- Replace shift solenoid G if its winding fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair the control circuit if testing confirms the fault is outside the solenoid and harness.
Can I keep driving?
If shifts are harsh, delayed, or slipping, avoid heavy loads and drive only as needed to reach a safe place for diagnosis. Severe slipping or loss of drive calls for stopping, because continued operation may cause further damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
