OBD-II fault code

P0758: Shift Solenoid B Electrical

What it means

Shift Solenoid "B" Electrical: an electrical fault is present. Shift solenoids route transmission hydraulic pressure to engage the gears; faults cause harsh, delayed, or missed shifts.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid B is an electrically controlled valve that routes hydraulic pressure inside the transmission. The control module monitors its electrical circuit and sets this code when it detects an electrical fault, such as an open or short; this does not by itself identify a mechanical sticking problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or shorted winding
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and all transmission codes, then check live data for solenoid B commands and whether the transmission has entered a protective mode.
  2. With the ignition off, inspect the solenoid B wiring and transmission connectors for loose pins, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or damaged insulation.
  3. Check the solenoid B circuit for continuity and shorts using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's test procedure.
  4. Measure the solenoid B winding and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to identify an open or shorted coil.
  5. If the wiring and winding pass, check module commands and circuit control using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose solenoid B connector.
  • Clean corroded connector terminals and repair damaged seals.
  • Repair an open or short in the solenoid B wiring.
  • Replace shift solenoid B if its winding fails the manufacturer's test.
  • Repair the control module circuit only if testing confirms the fault is there.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission is in limp mode, shifts harshly, or slips, drive only as far as needed to reach a safe place for diagnosis; avoid high speeds and heavy loads. Continued operation can cause additional transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
