OBD-II fault code

P002A: B Camshaft Profile Actuator A Control Circuit/Open Bank 1

What it means

Open circuit at the cam profile actuator on the exhaust cam (profile A, bank 1). Same diagnosis as P001A but for the exhaust profile actuator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The B camshaft profile actuator controls a change in exhaust cam profile on Bank 1, while the module monitors its control circuit. P002A sets when that circuit is open, such as from a broken wire, an open actuator coil, or a connector terminal that has lost contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring break
  2. Actuator coil open
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to capture freeze-frame data and check for related Bank 1 cam profile or circuit codes.
  2. Locate the Bank 1 B cam profile actuator and inspect its connector for a backed-out pin, poor seating, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Trace the actuator harness for a break, chafing, or a disconnected section, paying attention to areas near heat or moving parts.
  4. With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check continuity through the wiring and actuator coil against the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If wiring continuity is intact, check connector terminal fit and module-side control wiring using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the Bank 1 B cam profile actuator plug and secure any loose terminal.
  • Repair a broken or chafed wire in the actuator harness.
  • Replace a damaged connector terminal or connector housing that cannot maintain contact.
  • Replace the Bank 1 exhaust profile actuator if its coil is confirmed open.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and unnecessary driving because the exhaust profile actuator may not operate, reducing power and potentially causing rough running or stalling. If the engine stalls or runs very roughly, stop and arrange diagnosis before continuing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
