What it means
The control circuit of camshaft profile actuator B (intake side) on bank 1 reports a control circuit/open condition. Cam profile B (high-lift or VTEC-style) cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Camshaft Profile Actuator B on Bank 1 controls the intake cam's alternate profile, such as a higher-lift mode, when commanded by the engine control module. This code sets when the Bank 1 actuator B control circuit is open, so the module cannot reliably command that profile.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in actuator control wire
- Open actuator coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and scan for related camshaft or actuator codes to determine when the Bank 1 profile change failed.
- Locate the Bank 1 intake-side Profile Actuator B connector and inspect for a loose plug, pushed-back pin, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
- Check the actuator control wire for an open between the actuator connector and its module or relay connection, using the manufacturer's wiring information.
- Test the actuator coil for continuity and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit and coil pass, use scan-tool output controls to confirm whether the module can command the Bank 1 intake profile actuator.
Common fixes
- Reseat the Bank 1 intake Profile Actuator B connector and restore any pushed-back terminal.
- Repair an open in the actuator control wire.
- Replace the Bank 1 intake Profile Actuator B coil if it is open.
- Repair a damaged connector or harness section in the Bank 1 actuator circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and high engine speeds because the intake cam may not switch to its intended profile, reducing power and potentially causing rough running or stalling. If it stalls, runs very roughly, or enters reduced-power mode, stop driving until the fault is diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
