What it means
Open circuit at the camshaft profile actuator (intake, profile A, bank 1). Used by systems with discrete cam-lift levels (e.g. BMW Valvetronic, Honda VTEC, Audi AVS) — the actuator that selects the lift profile cannot be driven.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 1 intake camshaft profile actuator selects profile A, a cam-lift mode used on engines with selectable lift profiles. The engine control module monitors the actuator control circuit; this code sets when the circuit is open and the actuator cannot be electrically driven.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring break or unplugged connector
- Actuator coil open
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check for related camshaft or actuator codes to see whether the fault appeared during a profile change or with other electrical faults.
- Locate the bank 1 profile A actuator and inspect its connector for disconnection, corrosion, damaged terminals, or a pin pushed back into the housing.
- Trace the actuator wiring for breaks, chafing, or damage, paying particular attention to the section near the actuator and connector.
- With power off as specified by the manufacturer, check continuity through the actuator coil and its wiring to identify an open circuit.
- Check the control circuit and module command using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to distinguish a wiring open from an actuator or driver fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the bank 1 profile A actuator connector.
- Repair a broken wire or terminal in the actuator circuit.
- Replace a damaged connector or pushed-back terminal.
- Replace the actuator if its coil is confirmed open.
Can I keep driving?
You may notice reduced power or rough running because the engine may not be able to select the intended cam-lift profile. Avoid demanding acceleration if it is running poorly, and stop if it stalls or becomes difficult to control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
