What it means
Open circuit at the exhaust cam profile actuator (profile A, bank 2). Same as P002A on bank 2. The cam phaser actuator adjusts intake/exhaust timing under load — a stuck or slow phaser kills mid-rpm torque and can throw correlation codes between cam and crank.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 exhaust cam profile actuator uses an electrical control circuit to change cam timing as engine conditions change. The module monitors that circuit and sets P002D when it detects an open path, such as a broken wire or a terminal that has lost contact; the fault can keep the exhaust cam from responding and reduce power in the mid-range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring break
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame data and check for other cam timing or circuit codes, which can help show whether the fault is isolated to bank 2's profile A actuator.
- With the engine off, inspect the bank 2 exhaust cam profile actuator connector and nearby harness for a loose plug, backed-out pin, broken wire, or heat damage.
- Check the connector terminals for corrosion or poor fit, and make sure each wire is secure where it enters the connector body.
- Use the wiring diagram to test continuity through the profile A control circuit and its connections, looking for an open between the module and actuator.
- If the wiring and terminals are intact, test the actuator and module connections using the manufacturer's procedure to locate the open circuit.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the bank 2 profile A actuator plug and secure any loose wiring.
- Repair a broken control-circuit wire or a poor connector terminal.
- Replace a connector with damaged or corroded terminals.
- Replace the exhaust cam profile actuator if its control circuit is open internally, after confirming the harness is sound.
- Repair a confirmed internal module connection fault using the manufacturer's approved repair procedure.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, a short, gentle trip may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration because bank 2 exhaust cam timing may not respond and power can drop. Stop driving if it stalls, runs very roughly, or loses enough power to make traffic unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
