OBD-II fault code

P2B36: A Camshaft Profile Actuator B Control Circuit/Open Bank 2

What it means

The control circuit of camshaft profile actuator B (intake side) on bank 2 reports a control circuit/open condition. Cam profile B (high-lift or VTEC-style) cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The camshaft profile actuator switches the intake cam on bank 2 to its alternate, higher-lift profile when the engine needs it. The control module monitors actuator B's electrical circuit and sets P2B36 when it detects an open path, so it cannot reliably command that profile.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in actuator control wire
  2. Open actuator coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live data for the bank 2 intake profile command and any related actuator codes to see when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 intake actuator B connector for a pushed-back pin, poor seating, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
  3. With the ignition off and the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check continuity through the actuator control wire for an open.
  4. Measure actuator B's coil and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to identify an internally open coil.
  5. If the wiring and coil pass, use the manufacturer’s circuit test procedure to check the module connection and verify actuator operation.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the bank 2 intake actuator B plug and secure any pushed-back terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of the actuator control wire.
  • Replace actuator B if its coil is open.
  • Repair a faulty module connection if circuit tests identify one.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly, a short, gentle drive may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration because the intake cam may not switch to its higher-lift profile. Stop if it stalls or runs roughly; continued driving can worsen drivability and fuel economy.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
