OBD-II fault code

P0028: Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 2)

What it means

The ECU detected that the bank 2 intake valve oil control solenoid does not respond as expected. Common causes are sludge in the oil passages, a sticking solenoid, or low oil pressure that prevents proper VVT phasing on the intake side.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 intake valve control solenoid meters oil to move the intake cam phaser and change valve timing. The module monitors whether the Bank 2 intake cam responds within its expected range and sets P0028 when its commanded adjustment does not produce the expected result.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oil control valve mechanically stuck
  2. Sludge or debris in oil passages
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or engine hesitation
  • Reduced power or acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and watch commanded and actual Bank 2 intake cam timing to identify when the cam response is out of range.
  2. Check oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer’s requirements because poor oil supply can limit intake cam movement.
  3. Inspect the Bank 2 intake solenoid and connector for sludge, debris, corrosion, loose pins, and damaged wiring.
  4. Test the solenoid and its circuit and confirm commanded operation using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If oil and electrical checks do not explain the fault, inspect the Bank 2 intake oil passages and phaser for restriction or sticking.

Common fixes

  • Correct the oil level and replace unsuitable or contaminated oil and filter with the specified grade.
  • Clean a contaminated Bank 2 intake solenoid and accessible passages if permitted by the manufacturer’s procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contacts at the Bank 2 intake solenoid.
  • Replace a solenoid or phaser only if testing confirms it is sticking or faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If the light is steady and the engine runs acceptably, keep driving brief and gentle; hesitation, reduced acceleration, and poor fuel economy may continue or worsen. Stop if the engine stalls or runs very roughly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
