OBD-II fault code

P001E: A Camshaft Profile Actuator A Control Circuit Low Bank 2

What it means

Low control voltage at the cam profile actuator (intake, profile A, bank 2). Same fault as P001B on bank 2. The cam phaser actuator adjusts intake/exhaust timing under load — a stuck or slow phaser kills mid-rpm torque and can throw correlation codes between cam and crank.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 2 intake camshaft profile A actuator selects a cam-lift mode on engines with selectable lift profiles. The engine control module monitors the actuator control circuit; this code sets when the circuit voltage is lower than expected, such as from a short to ground, a shorted coil, or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live actuator commands and related codes to establish when the bank 2 profile A circuit reads low.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 actuator connector for corrosion or loose terminals and examine the harness for insulation worn through against the engine or nearby parts.
  3. Check the control wire for a short to ground using the manufacturer's circuit test procedure.
  4. Measure the actuator coil and connector condition against the manufacturer's specification to check for an internal short or high-resistance connection.
  5. If the wiring and actuator pass, test the module control output according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose bank 2 actuator connector terminals.
  • Repair harness insulation or wiring shorted to ground.
  • Replace the bank 2 profile A actuator if its coil is confirmed faulty.
  • Repair the module circuit only if testing confirms a module-side fault.

Can I keep driving?

The engine may lose power or run roughly if the bank 2 cam-lift profile cannot be controlled. Keep acceleration gentle if symptoms are present, and stop if the engine stalls.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
