OBD-II fault code

C0542: Brake Pressure Sensor B Circuit Low

What it means

Brake pressure sensor B signal voltage below expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

How it works

Brake Pressure Sensor B converts hydraulic pressure into a signal monitored by the ABS module. C0542 sets when Sensor B's signal circuit is below the expected electrical range, often because the signal is grounded or the connection has excessive resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • Traction or stability control warning light on
  • ABS functions may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame and live ABS data to confirm Sensor B is low and compare it with Sensor A or other available pressure data.
  2. Inspect Sensor B's connector seal and terminals for water, corrosion, poor fit, or a pin pushed back.
  3. Trace Sensor B's harness for chafing, crushed insulation, or contact between the signal wire and ground.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check Sensor B's reference, ground, and signal circuits for a short to ground or high resistance, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Wiggle the harness near Sensor B and the module while monitoring live data to see whether the low reading changes.
  6. If the circuit is sound, test Sensor B's signal and confirm hydraulic pressure is plausible.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure Sensor B connector terminals or replace damaged seals.
  • Repair chafed wiring or a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Correct a poor ground or other high-resistance connection in Sensor B's circuit.
  • Replace Brake Pressure Sensor B if its output remains low with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Basic braking may remain, but ABS and related stability functions can be limited because Sensor B's signal is too low to use reliably. Drive gently with extra stopping distance, and stop if braking feel or performance changes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
