OBD-II fault code

C0540: Brake Pressure Sensor A Circuit/Open

What it means

The ABS module monitors the circuit for brake pressure sensor A and sets this code when it detects an open circuit.

How it works

Brake Pressure Sensor A reports hydraulic pressure to the ABS module through a monitored electrical circuit. C0540 sets when that circuit is open, so the module cannot receive a usable Sensor A signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or damaged wiring
  2. Loose or damaged connector
  3. Brake pressure sensor fault

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • Traction or stability control warning light on
  • ABS functions may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS freeze-frame and related codes to confirm the fault concerns Sensor A's circuit and identify when it occurred.
  2. Inspect Sensor A's connector for a disconnected plug, damaged lock, corrosion, or a terminal pushed back.
  3. Trace the sensor wiring toward the ABS module and look for a broken conductor or damaged harness.
  4. With the wiring diagram, check continuity through Sensor A's signal, supply, and ground paths as appropriate, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Monitor live Sensor A data while carefully moving the harness to see whether the reading returns intermittently.
  6. If the circuit is intact but Sensor A remains unavailable, test the sensor and module connections.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect Sensor A's loose connector and secure its lock.
  • Repair a broken wire or damaged terminal in the Sensor A circuit.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals and restore a sound connection.
  • Replace Brake Pressure Sensor A if the open is internal to the sensor and wiring checks out.

Can I keep driving?

Basic braking may remain, but ABS and related traction or stability functions can be limited without Sensor A data. Drive carefully and leave extra stopping distance; stop if pedal feel or braking performance changes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
