OBD-II fault code

C0541: Brake Pressure Sensor B Range/Performance

What it means

Brake Pressure Sensor B Range/Performance: the signal is implausible or outside the valid range.

How it works

Brake Pressure Sensor B reports hydraulic pressure to the ABS module for brake control and stability calculations. C0541 sets when Sensor B's reading is out of range or implausible, which is a performance issue rather than a specifically low or high circuit signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Brake pressure sensor fault
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Hydraulic pressure problem

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • Traction or stability control warning light on
  • ABS functions may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS freeze-frame data and compare Sensor B pressure with Sensor A and brake-pedal input to see when the readings diverged.
  2. With the vehicle stationary, watch Sensor B live data while applying and releasing the brake pedal for a smooth, plausible change.
  3. Inspect Sensor B's connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, fluid contamination, or physical damage.
  4. Check Sensor B's reference, ground, and signal circuits using the wiring diagram and compare measurements with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit is sound, check for hydraulic leaks, trapped air, or another pressure issue that could make the reading implausible.
  6. Compare the two pressure sensors and verify Sensor B's output before concluding that the sensor itself has failed.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged Sensor B connector or wiring.
  • Correct a confirmed hydraulic leak or pressure problem and bleed the system if specified.
  • Replace Brake Pressure Sensor B if its output remains implausible with sound wiring and hydraulics.
  • Repair or replace the ABS hydraulic unit or module only if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Braking may still work, but ABS, traction control, or stability functions can be limited because the module cannot rely on Sensor B's pressure reading. Drive cautiously and arrange diagnosis promptly; stop if pedal feel or braking performance worsens.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
