What is the Volkswagen Caddy?
The Caddy is Volkswagen’s compact van and people carrier. Its upright shape and practical cabin suit work duties as well as everyday passenger and leisure use. The name dates back to a compact commercial vehicle Volkswagen introduced in Europe, based on the Golf.
The more recent generations developed that practical format into a broader range that includes passenger versions. The current generation is based on Volkswagen’s modular transverse-engine platform, and the EU range includes a plug-in hybrid.
Caddy generations
Generation III ran from 2010 to 2015, followed by Generation IV from 2015 to 2020. Generation V began in 2021 and continues in the listed range.
Across these generations, the Caddy has served commercial users and households needing a versatile van-based vehicle. The EU range for the latest generation includes plug-in hybrid power.
Engines and power
In the EU, engine sizes range from 1.0 to 2.0 litres, with outputs from 55 kW (75 PS) to 135 kW (184 PS). Listed fuel types include diesel, petrol, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, natural gas, LPG and other classifications. The UK figures cover 1.2- to 2.0-litre engines producing 48 kW (65 PS) to 110 kW (150 PS), with diesel, petrol and natural gas versions.
The French range covers 1.5- to 2.0-litre engines, producing 55 kW (75 PS) to 125 kW (170 PS). Fuel types listed there are petrol, diesel and natural gas.
Fuel consumption and markets
The lowest listed conventional consumption in the EU is 4.7 L/100 km on WLTP. The EU plug-in hybrid figure is 0.5 L/100 km on WLTP, a weighted figure that assumes some driving is electric. The UK low is 4.3 L/100 km on NEDC, while France lists 4.6 L/100 km on WLTP. WLTP and NEDC are different test procedures, so their results are not directly comparable.
The Caddy appears in EU registration figures from 2010 to 2025, UK figures from 2000 to 2018 and French figures from 2012 to 2026. EU registrations total 1,268,073.
