What is the Volkswagen Caravelle?

The Caravelle is the passenger-carrying member of Volkswagen’s Transporter van family. Its tall, roomy body is designed for carrying people and luggage, and suits family travel, shuttle work and minibus duties. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles builds vans for both passenger and work uses; the Caravelle gives the Transporter range a people-moving role.

With its spacious cabin and flexible seating, the Caravelle can carry more passengers and luggage than a conventional car. It is a practical fit for people who need that extra room in everyday use.

Caravelle generations

The T5 generation covers 2010–2015 in the European, French and UK generation listings. It continued the Transporter family’s adaptable van layout, configured for passengers. The T6 followed for 2016–2019, carrying on the same broad idea with a newer design. Both generations use factory code 7E.

The Caravelle’s place in the Transporter family is clear: it is arranged to carry people, rather than cargo alone.

Engines, power and fuel consumption

In European Union registration figures, the Caravelle spans diesel, petrol, electric, natural gas and other fuel types, with engines from 1.4 L to 2.5 L and power from 62 kW (84 PS) to 210 kW (286 PS). UK figures list petrol and diesel engines from 1.9 L to 3.2 L, producing 66 kW (89 PS) to 173 kW (235 PS). France lists diesel versions producing 62 kW (84 PS) to 132 kW (179 PS).

The lowest listed consumption is 7.4 L/100 km in the EU figures under WLTP, 6 L/100 km in the UK figures under NEDC, and 6.8 L/100 km in France under NEDC. WLTP and NEDC are different European test procedures, so these results are not directly equivalent.

Where was the Caravelle sold?

The Caravelle appears in European Union registration figures for 2010–2025, UK figures for 2000–2019, and French figures for 2012–2014. EU registrations total 111,012. The Caravelle serves both private and professional passenger transport needs across these markets.
