MG’s history and identity

MG began in the United Kingdom as Morris Garages, a marque known for sporty cars. Today it is part of China’s SAIC Motor group. The name still carries that British motoring heritage, while the modern range reaches well beyond sports cars into hatchbacks, estates and SUVs.

What MG models are listed?

The model names span several eras. Early entries include the MG F, MG ZR, MG ZT and MG TF, alongside Rover-badged cars such as the Rover 25 and Rover 75. The later range is led by compact cars and SUVs: the MG3, MG4, ZS and HS, with the MG5 estate and larger MG6 also represented.

The ZS has the broadest run among the listed models, from 2002 to 2026, though the name covers cars from different periods. The MG3 runs from 2013 to 2026, and the HS from 2019 to 2026. Together, those names show how MG’s focus shifted from a varied line-up that included sports and saloon models to a modern range centred on everyday family cars.

How has MG’s range changed?

The model years tell a story of changing priorities. The early 2000s list includes sports cars, saloons and hatchbacks; by the 2010s, the MG3 and MG GS had arrived. SUVs then became a more prominent part of the line-up, with the HS and ZS among the models appearing across the later years.

The range also gained dedicated electric models. The MG4, MG5, Marvel R and MGS5 EV appear alongside the EHS, while the Cyberster brings the sports-car name into the modern period. The IM5, IM6, S6 EV and S9 add further names in the latest model years listed.

Where are MG cars recorded?

MG appears in official registration and vehicle figures for the European Union, the United Kingdom and France. In EU registrations, the ZS leads among the listed models, with 358,120 registrations from 2017 to 2025. The MG4 and MG3 follow, each with more than 100,000 over their respective listed periods. These totals show the reach of MG’s newer hatchback and SUV lines in the EU.

Figures from different markets need context: Europe uses WLTP or, for older cars, NEDC test procedures; the USA uses EPA testing, and Canada uses a five-cycle procedure. This page’s market list covers the EU, UK and France, so it does not give US or Canadian figures.
