What is the Mercedes-Benz SLK?
The SLK was Mercedes-Benz’s compact two-seat roadster. Its Vario roof, a folding metal roof, let the car switch between open-air and closed motoring. The SLK name was later replaced by SLC.
SLK generations
The first generation, R170, ran from 1996 to 2004. The second, R171, followed from 2004 to 2011, and the third, R172, ran from 2011 to 2016. Each kept the compact roadster concept and folding metal roof. The final generation offered a roof panel that could change between transparent and dark, and included a diesel option in some markets.
Engines and power
EU versions covered petrol and diesel engines from 1.8 to 5.5 litres, with outputs from 135 kW (184 PS) to 310 kW (421 PS). Among the most registered EU versions were a 1.8-litre petrol with 135 kW (184 PS) and a 2.1-litre diesel with 150 kW (204 PS). US and Canadian listings cover petrol engines from 1.8 to 5.5 litres.
How economical is the SLK?
The lowest listed UK consumption is 4.4 L/100 km on NEDC, while France’s lowest is 4.8 L/100 km, also on NEDC. In the USA, the lowest figure is 8.7 L/100 km under EPA testing, equivalent to 27 MPG combined. Canada’s lowest listed result is 8.5 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. European NEDC, the US EPA test and Canada’s 5-cycle method use different procedures, so their results are not directly interchangeable.

Official figures are measured on standard test procedures and differ between markets. Your consumption depends on how, where and in what conditions you drive.
