What is the Mercedes-Benz SLC?

The SLC is a two-seat roadster with a retractable hardtop. With the roof closed it has the look and feel of a coupe; lower it and the cabin opens to the sky. It sat below the larger SL in Mercedes-Benz’s range and carried on the compact roadster tradition begun by the SLK.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the SLK in 1996. In 2016, the third-generation SLK was updated and renamed SLC, a nod to its close technical ties with the C-Class. The R172 kept the familiar two-seat, folding-hardtop format while gaining revised styling and technology.

Generations and engines

The SLC was sold from 2016 to 2021 as the R172, an updated version of the third-generation SLK. The new name and refreshed styling marked the change, while the compact roadster layout remained.

In the EU, engines ranged from 1.6 to 3.0 litres, with power from 115 kW (156 PS) to 287 kW (390 PS). Petrol and diesel versions were available, along with versions classified as other fuel types in EU registration figures. UK versions ranged from 135 kW (184 PS) to 287 kW (390 PS). US and Canadian versions were petrol-powered, with engines from 2.0 to 3.0 litres.

How economical is the Mercedes-Benz SLC?

The lowest listed EU figure is 6.9 L/100 km on WLTP. In the UK, the lowest is 4.4 L/100 km on NEDC. In the US, the EPA figure is 8.7 L/100 km, or 27 MPG combined; Canada’s lowest listed result is 8.5 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. WLTP and NEDC are European procedures, while the US EPA and Canadian 5-cycle tests use different methods, so figures across markets are not directly comparable.

Where was the SLC sold?

The SLC appears in EU registration figures from 2016 to 2021 and UK figures over the same period. US and Canadian figures cover 2017 to 2020. EU registrations total 50,199. The leading EU versions included the 2.1-litre diesel rated at 150 kW (204 PS), the 2.0-litre petrol at 135 kW (184 PS), and the 1.6-litre petrol at 115 kW (156 PS).
