What is the Mazda MX-5?

The Mazda MX-5 is a compact, two-seat sports roadster with an open-top body. It is called the Miata in the United States and the Roadster in Japan. With its folding roof and focused driving position, it puts the enjoyment of a small sports car first.

Mazda created the MX-5 to bring the lightweight roadster idea to modern roads. The company’s phrase “Jinba Ittai”, or horse and rider as one, describes the close connection between car and driver that has guided the model through its generations.

MX-5 generations

The generations are known by their codes: NA (1990–1997), NB (1999–2005), NC (2006–2015) and ND (2016–today). The NA established the compact two-seat formula. The NB refined its design and body, the NC brought a larger interpretation, and the ND returned to a more compact approach with Mazda’s Kodo design language and Skyactiv technology.

Engines, power and fuel consumption

EU versions span 1.5- to 2.0-litre petrol engines, with power from 93 kW (126 PS) to 177 kW (241 PS). UK versions cover the same engine sizes, with listed power reaching 184 kW (250 PS). US versions use 1.6- to 2.0-litre petrol engines; Canadian versions use 1.8- to 2.0-litre engines.

The lowest listed EU consumption is 6.2 L/100 km on WLTP. UK figures list 6 L/100 km on NEDC, while France lists 7.1 L/100 km on NEDC. The best combined US EPA rating is 30 MPG, and Canada’s lowest listed figure is 7.8 L/100 km on the 5-cycle test. These results use different procedures: WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and the 5-cycle test in Canada.

Where was the MX-5 sold?

The MX-5 appears in US figures for 1990–2026, Canadian figures for 1995–2026 and UK figures for 2000–2026. EU registration figures cover 2010–2025, while French figures cover 2012–2015. Its name varies between markets, but the two-seat roadster layout remains central to the model.
