What is the Mazda RX-8?

The Mazda RX-8 is a four-seat sports car with a coupé-like profile and rear-hinged rear doors. Mazda called this arrangement its freestyle door system. It paired a rotary engine with space for four adults, giving the car a different character from a conventional two-seat sports car.

RX-8 generation and design

The RX-8’s single generation ran from 2004–2012 and carries the SE3P code. Mazda designed it around the RENESIS rotary engine and a front-midship layout, setting the engine back from the front axle. Its four-door cabin and rear-hinged back doors became defining features, combining a low sports-car shape with room for rear passengers.

Engines, power and fuel consumption

The UK figures list a 2.6 L petrol engine with power from 141 kW (192 PS) to 170 kW (231 PS). The US and Canadian entries identify the rotary engine as 1.3 L. The UK’s lowest stated consumption is 10.6 L/100 km on the NEDC test. In the US, the EPA best combined rating is 19 MPG, or 12.4 L/100 km; Canada’s lowest figure is 12.5 L/100 km on the NRCan five-cycle test. European NEDC, US EPA and Canadian five-cycle results use different procedures, so the numbers are not directly equivalent.

Where was the Mazda RX-8 sold?

The figures cover the United Kingdom from 2004–2010, the United States and Canada from 2004–2011, and European Union registrations for 2010–2011. The EU registration total for those years is 616. The RX-8 entries in all four markets are petrol-powered.
