What is the Mazda MX-3?

The MX-3 was a compact, two-door coupe with a rear hatch and room for four. Its small footprint and hatchback layout gave it a practical side, while its low coupe shape set it apart from a conventional family car. Mazda also sold it as the Eunos Presso and Autozam AZ-3 in some markets.

One of its standout features was a 1.8-litre V6. Mazda described it as the world’s smallest-displacement mass-produced V6 engine at the time.

MX-3 generations

The MX-3 had one generation, code EC, running from 1992 to 1998. Mazda’s 1990s model history describes it as a four-seat coupe with a rear hatch and V6 engine.

Engines and power

Engine and power ranges varied by market. EU figures list plug-in hybrid and electric entries, an engine size of 1.7 litres, and power from 55 kW (75 PS) to 125 kW (170 PS). UK figures give a power range of 55 kW (75 PS) to 170 kW (231 PS), across plug-in hybrid and electric entries.

US figures include petrol engines from 1.6 to 1.9 litres; Canadian figures list petrol engines from 1.6 to 1.8 litres. Canada’s listed power is 107 kW (145 PS).

Fuel consumption and markets

The lowest EU plug-in hybrid figure is 1 L/100 km on WLTP. This official weighted figure assumes that some driving is electric. The UK plug-in hybrid figure is 7.6 L/100 km on WLTP.

In the US, the lowest listed consumption is 8.1 L/100 km, and the best combined rating is 29 MPG under EPA testing. Canada’s lowest listed figure is 8.3 L/100 km on the NRCan 5-cycle test. WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA testing in the US, and Canada’s 5-cycle procedure use different methods, so results are not directly equivalent. EU registration figures span 2020–2025; UK figures span 2021–2026, while US and Canadian listings cover different periods.
