What is the Land Rover Freelander?

The Freelander was Land Rover’s compact SUV, bringing the brand’s four-wheel-drive character to a smaller, more everyday vehicle. It offered a roomier, more road-oriented feel than the larger models in the range. Introduced in 1997, it was sold in two generations; the second was also known as the LR2 in North America.

Freelander generations

The first Freelander (L314) ran from 1997–2006 in Europe and the UK, and 2002–2006 in the US and Canada. It was followed by Freelander 2 (LR2, L359), listed as 2007–2014 in Europe and the UK, and 2008–2015 in North America. The second generation carried the compact SUV idea forward with a more substantial design.

Engines and power

In the EU, engine sizes range from 2.0 L to 3.2 L, with power from 110 kW (150 PS) to 177 kW (241 PS). The UK range spans 1.8 L to 3.2 L and 110 kW (150 PS) to 142 kW (193 PS); France’s power range is 110 kW (150 PS) to 177 kW (241 PS). The US and Canada figures cover 2.0 L to 3.2 L engines. Petrol and diesel versions appear in the European market figures, while the US and Canadian figures are petrol-only.

Fuel consumption and CO₂

The lowest listed consumption is 6 L/100 km on the UK and French NEDC tests. In the US, the lowest listed figure is 11.8 L/100 km under EPA testing; in Canada, it is 11.9 L/100 km under NRCan’s 5-cycle procedure. NEDC figures in Europe, EPA results in the US and Canada’s 5-cycle results use different methods, so figures are best compared within the same market. Official CO₂ figures depend on the version and test procedure.

Where was the Freelander sold?

The Freelander appears in official figures for EU registrations from 2010–2016, the UK from 2000–2015, France from 2012–2014, the US from 2002–2015 and Canada from 2003–2015. In EU registration figures, 2.2 L diesel versions feature prominently, including entries rated at 110 kW (150 PS).

Questions and answers

Was the Freelander a compact SUV?

Yes. It was Land Rover’s smaller SUV, positioned below the Discovery and Range Rover in size.

What is the LR2?

LR2 was the North American name for the second-generation Freelander, also known as Freelander 2.

Why are the consumption figures different by market?

The markets use different test procedures: Europe used NEDC for these listed figures, the US uses EPA testing, and Canada uses the 5-cycle procedure.
