What is the Ford Expedition?

The Expedition is Ford’s full-size SUV, with a spacious cabin and a truck-based design. It has been part of Ford’s North American range since its introduction, serving families and drivers who need room for passengers and luggage.

Generations and engines

The Expedition has five generations: the first ran from 1997–2002, the second from 2003–2006, the third from 2007–2017, the fourth from 2018–2024, and the fifth from 2025 onward. The 2018 redesign brought an aluminum-alloy body over a steel frame and a 3.5 L EcoBoost V6.

US and Canadian listings include petrol engines from 3.5 L to 5.4 L, as well as flex-fuel E85 versions. In the EU registration figures, the two recorded versions are 3.5 L petrol models rated at 280 kW (381 PS).

Fuel consumption and markets

US EPA listings span 1997–2027 and give a best combined rating of 20 MPG. The lowest listed consumption is 11.8 L/100 km. Canada’s NRCan listings span 1997–2026, with a lowest figure of 12.4 L/100 km on the 5-cycle test. These figures use different procedures: EPA testing in the United States and the 5-cycle method in Canada.
