What is the BMW M3?

The BMW M3 is the high-performance member of the 3 Series family, developed by BMW M with a strong motorsport connection. Over its history it has appeared as a coupé, saloon and convertible. Since the F80 generation, the M3 has been a saloon; the related coupé and convertible carry the M4 name.

The first M3, the E30, was developed as a road-going homologation model for touring-car racing. Later generations broadened the car’s everyday role and brought new engine layouts, while keeping the M3 closely tied to BMW’s performance range.

M3 generations

The M3 generations are E30 (1986–1991), E36 (1992–1999), E46 (2000–2006), E90 (2007–2013; including E92 and E93 body codes), F80 (2014–2018) and G80 (2020 onward). The E30 was developed for touring-car homologation. The E36 brought the first M3 inline six and a broader everyday role; the E46 continued with a high-revving six-cylinder engine, while the E90 generation introduced a V8.

The F80 returned to a turbocharged inline six and marked the split between the M3 saloon and M4 coupé and convertible. The G80 continues with a 3.0-litre petrol engine in the listed UK and French versions.

Engines and power

Listed engine sizes span 3.0 to 4.4 litres in the EU and 2.3 to 4.0 litres in the US. The EU power range is 309 kW (420 PS) to 497 kW (676 PS). UK listings give 3.0-litre petrol versions with 390–405 kW (530–551 PS); French listings give 3.0-litre versions with 309–375 kW (420–510 PS).

Across its generations, the M3 has used four-cylinder, six-cylinder and V8 engines. The F80 and G80 generations use turbocharged six-cylinder engines.

How economical is the BMW M3?

The lowest listed consumption is 9.7 L/100 km in the EU under WLTP, 8.3 L/100 km in the UK under NEDC, and 8.8 L/100 km in France under NEDC. In the US, the lowest listed figure is 11.2 L/100 km under EPA testing, with a best combined rating of 21 MPG. Canada’s lowest listed figure is 11.4 L/100 km under the 5-cycle procedure.

These figures use different test procedures: WLTP and NEDC in Europe, EPA in the US and 5-cycle testing in Canada. EU registration figures span 2010 to 2025 and total 58,262 M3s.
