OBD-II fault code

P2E24: Drive Motor A Phase Z Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The current sensor for drive motor A phase Z reports a circuit range/performance fault. Phase current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The phase Z current sensor on drive motor A tells the control module how much current is flowing in that motor phase. P2E24 sets when its reading is outside the expected range or does not track operating conditions as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Current sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data with a scan tool and note the motor load, speed, and temperature associated with the phase Z fault.
  2. Compare live phase Z current data with phases X and Y under the same conditions, using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  3. With the vehicle safely disabled according to its service instructions, inspect the phase Z sensor connector and harness for damage, loose fit, contamination, or corrosion.
  4. Check the phase Z sensor circuit's wiring, power, ground, and signal for opens, shorts, or poor contact using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the phase Z sensor against the manufacturer's specification for out-of-range or inconsistent response.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or chafed wiring in the phase Z sensor circuit.
  • Clean, repair, and secure the phase Z connector if its contacts are loose or corroded.
  • Replace the phase Z current sensor if its reading remains out of range or inconsistent with a verified circuit.
  • Repair or replace the control module only if testing confirms a module fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and high motor loads because incorrect phase Z feedback may lead to reduced torque or limp mode. Stop safely if the vehicle loses substantial power or warns that it may shut down.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
