What it means
The current sensor for drive motor A phase Z reports a circuit fault. Phase current measurement is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive motor A has a separate current sensor for phase Z, which reports that phase's current to the control module. P2E23 sets when the phase Z sensor circuit has an electrical fault that prevents the module from relying on its reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Current sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and check when phase Z data becomes abnormal or drops out.
- Compare live phase Z current with phases X and Y under matching motor conditions to see whether the fault is isolated to phase Z.
- With the vehicle safely disabled according to its service instructions, inspect the phase Z sensor connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, contamination, or damage.
- Check phase Z circuit wiring and connections for opens, shorts, poor ground, or intermittent contact using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the circuit is intact, test the phase Z current sensor against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure a loose phase Z sensor connector.
- Repair damaged or chafed wiring in the phase Z sensor circuit.
- Clean or repair contaminated or corroded phase Z connector pins.
- Replace the phase Z current sensor if it fails testing with a verified circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid high motor loads because the vehicle may reduce torque, enter limp mode, or shut down. If power becomes unpredictable or a shutdown warning appears, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
