OBD-II fault code

P0BFA: Drive Motor B Phase W Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The current sensor for drive motor B phase W reports a circuit range/performance fault. Phase current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor B has a current sensor for each motor phase, and the phase W sensor reports W-phase current to the hybrid or EV control module. This code sets when the phase W reading falls outside its expected performance range, which may reflect sensor offset drift, magnetic interference or an aged sensor element.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Current sensor offset drifted
  2. Magnetic offset
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live phase W current with phases U and V to see whether the W reading is offset or implausible.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down under the manufacturer’s high-voltage procedure, inspect the phase W sensor and harness for damage, loose connections or nearby magnetic interference.
  3. Check the phase W sensor connector, wiring and grounds for poor contact or ground offset, comparing findings with the manufacturer’s specification.
  4. Compare the phase W sensor output with the other phase readings under the manufacturer’s specified test conditions to assess offset drift.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test the phase W sensor and its control module input before replacing either component.

Common fixes

  • Remove an identified magnetic source affecting the phase W sensor.
  • Clean and secure the phase W sensor connector or repair its terminals.
  • Repair damaged phase W wiring or a poor ground connection.
  • Replace the phase W sensor if it remains out of range after circuit checks.
  • Repair or replace the control module only if its input is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may limit torque, enter limp mode or shut down because phase W current feedback is unreliable. Avoid driving with limited or unstable power, since continued operation can result in loss of propulsion.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
