OBD-II fault code

P2E20: Drive Motor A Phase Y Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The current sensor for drive motor A phase Y reports a circuit range/performance fault. Phase current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The phase Y current sensor on drive motor A lets the control module track current in that specific motor phase. P2E20 sets when the phase Y reading falls outside its expected range or does not respond as expected for the motor's operating conditions.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Current sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save scan-tool freeze-frame data and note motor speed, load, and temperature when the phase Y range or performance fault set.
  2. Compare live phase Y current with phases X and Z under matching operating conditions, following the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  3. With the vehicle safely disabled according to its service instructions, inspect the phase Y sensor connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, contamination, or physical damage.
  4. Check phase Y circuit wiring, power, ground, and signal integrity for opens, shorts, or poor contact using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test the phase Y sensor's response against the manufacturer's specification and replace it only if it fails.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or chafed wiring in the phase Y sensor circuit.
  • Clean, repair, and secure the phase Y connector if its contact is loose or corroded.
  • Replace the phase Y current sensor if it remains out of range or responds inconsistently with a verified circuit.
  • Repair or replace the control module only if diagnostic checks confirm a module fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid high motor loads and hard acceleration because the system may limit torque or enter limp mode. If the vehicle warns of shutdown or loses substantial power, stop safely and arrange service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
