OBD-II fault code

P2C48: Coolant Pump C Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

Coolant pump C is commanded on but does not respond as expected. Pump motor stuck, relay weld, or driver fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Coolant pump C circulates coolant through the part of the cooling system it serves. The control module checks whether the pump responds when commanded on; P2C48 sets when pump C appears not to operate as expected, including a mechanically stuck pump or a control driver that fails to run it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump motor mechanically stuck
  2. Output driver fault
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light or coolant-system warning
  • Engine or component temperatures running high
  • Cooling fan running more often than usual

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live coolant temperatures and pump-command data to see when pump C was requested and whether temperatures rose.
  2. With the system cool, inspect pump C, its connector, and nearby wiring for damage, leaks, debris, or a disconnected plug.
  3. Use the vehicle's scan-tool output test, if available, to command pump C on and confirm whether it operates and coolant flow changes as expected.
  4. Check the pump C supply, ground, relay, and control-driver circuit against the wiring information and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the electrical command reaches the pump but it does not respond, assess the pump for mechanical binding or debris using the specified procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or damaged pump C connector or harness.
  • Clear debris or buildup that is preventing pump C from turning, where serviceable.
  • Repair a faulty pump C relay or control-driver circuit.
  • Replace coolant pump C if it is mechanically stuck or fails its commanded operation test.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the engine or the component cooled by pump C is overheating; stop safely and let it cool, as overheating can cause serious damage. If temperatures remain normal and no warning is active, drive only as needed while monitoring temperature closely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
