OBD-II fault code

P2601: Coolant Pump A Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

The Coolant Pump A control circuit has a range or performance fault. The code does not by itself establish that the pump is commanded on, stopped, or that coolant temperature is rising.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Coolant Pump A circulates coolant when commanded by the control module. This performance or stuck-off code means the pump's operation does not meet expected checks; it does not alone confirm that the pump was commanded on or that the engine is overheating.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump motor seized by debris or sediment
  2. Cracked rotor magnet decouples drive
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible engine overheating or reduced cooling, if the pump fault affects coolant circulation

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and scan-tool pump command, status, and coolant-temperature data to determine whether Pump A was expected to run.
  2. Inspect Pump A's connector, wiring, and accessible coolant passages for damage, leaks, or visible obstruction.
  3. With the system cool, check the coolant level and condition, since low or contaminated coolant can affect circulation.
  4. Use an actuator test, if supported, and observe pump operation or circulation according to the manufacturer's service procedure.
  5. If power and command reach the pump but it does not operate correctly, test for a seized motor, damaged rotor magnet, or restricted rotor movement.

Common fixes

  • Restore the specified coolant level and correct any leak found.
  • Repair a loose or damaged Pump A connector or wire.
  • Clear an obstruction or sediment only using the manufacturer's service procedure.
  • Replace Pump A if its motor or rotor is seized or decoupled.

Can I keep driving?

Check the temperature gauge and warnings; if temperature rises or an overheating warning appears, stop safely and shut the engine off. Do not continue driving while overheating, since poor coolant circulation can damage the engine.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
