OBD-II fault code

P2DF4: Coolant Pump E Control Circuit/Open

What it means

Coolant pump E reports a control circuit/open condition. Coolant circulation through the affected loop cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Coolant pump E circulates coolant through a particular engine or auxiliary cooling loop; the letter E identifies this pump in the vehicle's control scheme. The controller monitors its control circuit and expects a complete electrical path when it commands the pump. This code sets when that path appears open, so the pump cannot be commanded reliably.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump motor or driver fault
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Coolant temperature warning or rising temperature gauge
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and coolant temperature readings to see whether temperature rose when pump E was commanded.
  2. With the engine cool, identify pump E using vehicle service information and inspect its connector for a loose plug or pushed-back pin.
  3. Trace pump E wiring for breaks, chafing, heat damage, or disconnected grounds and power feeds.
  4. Check the pump circuit for continuity and shorts using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and test procedure.
  5. Command pump E with a suitable scan tool and check for control activity and pump response.
  6. If wiring and connections pass, test the pump motor and driver against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Seat the pump E connector and restore any pushed-back terminal.
  • Repair an open, damaged wire or poor ground in the pump E circuit.
  • Replace a failed pump E motor after confirming its supply and control circuits.
  • Repair a faulty pump driver if the pump and wiring test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

If the temperature gauge rises or a coolant temperature warning appears, stop safely and switch off the engine to avoid overheating damage. If temperature stays normal, keep any trip short and gentle and monitor it closely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
