OBD-II fault code

P2DF5: Coolant Pump E Control Circuit Low

What it means

Coolant pump E reports a control circuit low condition. Coolant circulation through the affected loop cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Coolant pump E circulates coolant through its assigned cooling loop. The controller monitors the pump E control circuit and sets this code when the circuit signal is lower than expected, which can prevent reliable pump operation. Corroded terminals, wiring faults, or a failed pump or driver can pull the signal low.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump motor or driver fault
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Coolant temperature warning or rising temperature gauge
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live coolant temperatures for evidence that the pump E loop was heating when the low-circuit fault appeared.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect pump E's connector and terminals for corrosion, moisture, looseness, or damaged seals.
  3. Inspect the circuit wiring and grounds for chafing, shorts to ground, or damaged insulation.
  4. Measure circuit voltage and voltage drop while pump E is commanded, following the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. Command pump E with a scan tool and compare its response and feedback with the expected operation.
  6. If connector and wiring checks pass, test the pump motor and control driver to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose pump E terminals, replacing damaged terminals as needed.
  • Repair wiring or ground faults that pull the control circuit low.
  • Replace pump E if it fails motor or commanded-operation testing.
  • Repair or replace a failed control driver if the pump and circuit are serviceable.

Can I keep driving?

A rising temperature gauge or coolant warning calls for stopping safely and switching off the engine; continued driving can overheat and damage it. If temperature is normal, limit driving and monitor it closely until the pump circuit is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
