OBD-II fault code

P28F6: Engine Disconnect Clutch Actuator Circuit Intermittent

What it means

The control circuit of the engine disconnect clutch actuator drops out intermittently. Loose connector or vibration-sensitive wiring.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine disconnect clutch actuator moves the clutch under hybrid control module command, and the module monitors its control circuit for reliable operation. This code sets when that circuit drops out intermittently, commonly because vibration affects a connector or damaged harness wire.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator connector not seated
  2. Harness chafing intermittently shorts the wire
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check related hybrid or transmission codes to see when the actuator circuit dropout occurred.
  2. Inspect the actuator connector for incomplete seating, corrosion, loose terminals, or damage, and look along the harness for chafing or pinching.
  3. With the vehicle stationary and secured, monitor actuator command or circuit status on a scan tool while gently moving the connector and harness.
  4. Check the actuator control wiring for intermittent opens or shorts while flexing the harness, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the harness and connector are sound, test the actuator and its control circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the actuator connector.
  • Repair loose or corroded connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring or an intermittent open or short in the actuator harness.
  • Replace the actuator if it fails the manufacturer's circuit or operation checks.

Can I keep driving?

The clutch may not engage or release consistently, which can cause harsh shifting, loss of drive, or limp mode. Avoid continuing if shifts become unpredictable or the vehicle slips; stop safely and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
